Program Description

Experience the Amazing South African Human Services,
Social Development and Culture
Visit and work side by side with colleagues in Local Organizations
Durban, Cape Town, Langa, Robben Island, Johannesburg, Pilanesberg, and Soweto

The purpose of this 6-credit undergraduate (or 3 credit graduate) SUNY New Paltz International Social Welfare course is to study the South African social welfare and social development system and immerse ourselves in the South African culture.

The program includes:

  • Visiting and working alongside colleagues in human services programs, governmental, and non-governmental organizations providing services to children and youth, people with disabilities, and people living with and affected by HIV/AIDS along with other social development programs.

  • Visiting sites of historical, cultural, and political interest in Durban (KwaZulu-Natal province), Cape Town and Langa (Western Cape province) and in Johannesburg and Soweto (Gauteng province).

  • Participating in and presenting at the South African National Association for Child Care Workers bi-annual conference in Durban. See:

Short flight with BA 6306 – operated by Commair Commercial Airlines will depart Durban at 06:00PM and arrive Cape Town at 08:10PM.

Wednesday July 17, 2019 – JOHANNESBURG
Another short flight with BA 6418 – operated by Commair Commercial Airlines will depart Cape Town at 04:00PM and arrive Johannesburg at 06:00PM

Saturday July 20, 2019 RETURN
Today you will depart Johannesburg with BA 0054 at 09:10PM and arrive London at 07:20AM

We accept only written cancellations.  There are cancellation fees

From February 05, 2019 to March 05, 2019: $300.00 cancellation fee
From March 06, 2019 to April 05, 2019: $700.00 cancellation fee
After April 05, 2019: 100% of total price cancellation fee

Travel Insurance premium is non-refundable

Important Airlines Rules

Incorrect spelling and/or differences in names on your ticket and passport
Can result in prevention of traveling by airport security and monetary consequences as the need of purchasing a new ticket
Failure to present valid passport and/or visas
You will be denied boarding, your airline reservation will be cancelled and you will have to purchase a new ticket at the fare available at the time you have your documents in order. Most airlines will not give you any credit – refund for your original ticket.
No show at the airport
Automatically cancels your whole reservation and invalidates your ticket. You will have to purchase a new ticket at the fare available at the time you re-schedule your trip. Most airlines will not give you any credit – refund for your original ticket.
Missing any flight for any reason
Automatically cancels the rest of the reservation, invalidates your ticket and you will have to purchase a one way ticket for the rest of your itinerary. Airlines will not give you any credit for the unused portion of your ticket.

Documents To Enter A Foreign Country

Possession of documentation is the responsibility of each passenger.
Failure to provide them will result in denied boarding with no right to refund.

Valid passport
Travellers going abroad need a valid passport.
Some countries require your US passport to be valid for at least six months after your return trip while some other countries may require a longer validity.
If your passport expires before the required validity then you will have to apply for a new one. Please check with the Consulate(s) of the country(s) that you plan to visit for further details on requirements.
American citizens can get passport information at

A visa is a stamp that is added to your passport by a country’s Consulate.
