Program Description

The Office of Academic Travel and COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning) are joining forces with the Nursing Department to offer a one credit travel component for the NUR 254 COIL Collaboration with Durban University of Technology’s (DUT) Department of Nursing, South Africa.

Led by Dr. Ellen Tangney, this class will include:

  • An opportunity to connect with Durban University of Technology’s (DUT) Department of Nursing
  • A service learning component and the opportunity for all participants to act as SUNY Ulster International ambassadors
  • A survey of community-based education practices
  • A visit to psychiatric clinics to view local mental health services & community health clinic centers 
  • A visit to traditional healers and health practitioners to observe their holistic approach to healing

You don not need to be registered in NUR 254 to take this class.

Saturday March 09, 2019 – Departure
Participants will meet at:
SUNY Ulster parking lot @ 4:40am

Van transportation to JFK airport will leave at 05:00am sharp.
Departure from New York JFK airport with South African Airlines SA#204 at 10:40am.

Sunday March 10, 2019 – Durban
You will arrive Johannesburg at 08:15am local time, where you will connect at 09:55am with SA #543. Arrival at Durban airport is scheduled at 11:00am.

March 16, 2019 Return
You will leave Durban airport with SA #554 at 04:50pm and arrive to Johannesburgh at 05:55pm.
Connection flight SA 203 will depart at 09:00pm

Sunday March 17, 2019 Arrival
Arrival at JFK airport is schedule at 06:40am local time
Van transportation will be waiting for Saturday you and take you back to SUNY Ulster campus.

Cancellations & Penalties

We accept only written cancellations. There are cancellation fees.

Important Airlines Rules

Incorrect spelling and/or differences in names on your ticket and passport
Can result in prevention of traveling by airport security and monetary consequences as the need of purchasing a new ticket.
Failure to present valid passport and/or visas:

You will be denied boarding, your airline reservation will be cancelled an you will have to purchase a new ticket at the fare available at the time you have your documents in order.
Most airlines will not give you any credit and/or refund for your original ticket
No show at the airport: 
Automatically cancels your whole reservation and invalidates your ticket. You will have to purchase a new ticket at the fare available at the time you re-schedule your trip. Most airlines will not give you any credit – refund for your original ticket
Missing any flight for any reason: 
Automatically cancels the rest of the reservation, invalidates your ticket and you will have to purchase a one way ticket for the rest of your itinerary. Airlines will not give you any credit for the unused portion of your ticket.

Documents To Enter A Foreign Country

Possession of documentation is the responsibility of each passenger.
Failure to provide them will result in denied boarding with no right to refund.

Valid passport
Travellers going abroad need a valid passport.
Some countries require your US passport to be valid for at least six months after your return trip while some other countries may require a longer validity.
If your passport expires before the required validity then you will have to apply for a new one. Please check with the Consulate(s) of the country(s) that you plan to visit for further details on requirements.
American citizens can get passport information at
North American citizens should check with their respective Consulate and will need proper documents to re‑enter the United States.
