Tour #3044
Theatre in New York City
Destination: New York City USA
Depart: May 15, 2013
Return: May 20, 2013

Course Description

The class will focus on the work of theatre producers, dramaturgs, actors, and educators in New York City. Students will compare the aesthetic qualities and marketing strategies of four different in scope and artistic mission theatres: the Broadway Disney Theatrical Group and Manhattan Theatre Club, the Off-Broadway New York Theatre Workshop, and the Off-Off-Broadway Overground Physical Theatre Company. Students will learn what it takes to produce commercial and non-commercial shows, to work as an educator in a leading theatre for new drama, and to be an actor and run an experimental company in a culturally diverse metropolis. Additional to the talks with local theatre professionals, students will have a chance to watch and critique five Broadway shows. They will investigate selected topics of art, history, architecture, management, etc., and complete a research portfolio.

Course Objectives

• To bring understanding of the various professional theatres in New York City
• To introduce important and less known professions in the theatre
• To create interest in theatre research and criticism
• To prepare students for a career in professional theatre
• To nurture love for traveling, exploration, and cultural diversity

The program is open to Theatre majors as well as non-majors pursuing general education credit, and the class assignments will be divided accordingly. It can also be beneficial for students majoring in English, Art, and Business.
